Unfinished Custom Writing Slopes

Shortly after that, we were commissoned to build a similar box made from Mahogany. These two Writing Slopes were custom-made and shipped 'unfinished' to our clients. They are pre-sanded and ready for the clients' to add their own finishing touches.

We have become intrigued with writing slopes. What a great concept they are! And much to our surprise, there are a lot of people interested in this type of lapdesk box.

This custom Writing Slope design, with Dovetail joinery, was inspired by the two slopes shown above and was built from Mahogany with Cherry Veneer Panels. It has been finished with 7 coats of Tung Oil and has genuine leather-covered panels. The leather edges have been enhanced with decorative gold tooling.

Each panel lifts up for storage of papers, envelopes, and other writing materials. The front panelled area allows for standard 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Small turn buttons hold the panels in place when in transit. Small tabs of leather have been added for easy lifting of the panels.

There are two 1 5/8" W x 1 5/8" L x 3 1/2" tall ink bottle holders separated by a covered storage compartment. This 7" L x 1 5/8" W x 1" deep pen compartment allows easy access to writing instruments such as pens and pencils.

Inside the back panel is a small drawer with solid brass knob for storage other special utensils such as pen nibs, erasers, etc. Two small turn buttons hold the drawer in place when in transit.

Polished solid brass hinges and solid brass full mortise lock with key accent this beautiful portable desk.
