You don't have to think about frightening additional shipping charges because Project Packs are priced delivered to your front porch! All lumber is surfaced on 2 sides to 13/16''. This gives you uniform thickness with a smooth surface so you're ready to start working. Widths vary between 4'' up to 10'' and lengths from 4' up to 8'.

What does 4/4, 8/4, 12/4 Mean?

These fractions refer to the thickness of lumber and read in quarters of inches. For instance: four-quarters (4/4), eight-quarters (8/4), twelve-quarters (12/4). 4/4 lumber is sawn off a log for a 1" rough thickness; since this is rough the surface is not smooth or ready to be worked, and therefore we have all lumber surfaced (or planed) on two sides (S2S). Rough lumber that is surfaced loses some thickness. After planing, lumber measures the following thicknesses:

[4/4 = 13/16"] [5/4 = 1-1/16"] [6/4 = 1-5/16"]

[8/4 = 1-13/16"] [12/4 = 2-13/16"] and so on...

What does S2S mean?

S2S is an abbreviation for "surfaced on two sides." All of our lumber is surfaced on two sides, meaning the faces are planed and the edges are rough. The actual thickness of our 4/4 S2S lumber is 13/16" or greater; 8/4 S2S lumber measures 1-13/16" thick and so on. Here is a little more explanation:

The image on the left: A picture of a rough sawn 4/4 hard maple board. It measures a full 1" thick, but notice that the surface is not smooth. Also notice that this board has a slight cup - a distortion in the wood that often occurs during the drying process.

The image on the right: A 4/4 hard maple board that is surfaced on 2 sides. Notice how the surface is smooth and clean. This board is ready to be worked.

Why is Woodworkers Source Lumber S2S?

Rough lumber requires surfacing to achieve a good working face. Lumber is typically sawn from a log using heavy-duty machinery which does not leave the faces or edges smooth. In addition, the process of kiln drying causes the wood to cup and/or distort. Surfacing must be done before any other operations can be performed and we've had this done so your lumber will be flat and ready to work.
